Built for British Columbia

Kerrisdale metal roofing: a roof that cannot rust.

BC is a coastline, a rainforest, a snow belt and a fire zone, sometimes on the same drive. Here is what an Interlock® aluminum roof does about each.

Salt air

Aluminum cannot rust

There is no iron in aluminum, so there is nothing to rust. It forms its own thin oxide layer, which re-forms if the surface is scratched. That is why it is the metal for oceanfront homes, island cabins and anywhere the wind carries salt.

Wildfire

Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly

Under ASTM E108 a fire classification belongs to an assembly, not a panel. On our roofs Class A is achieved with two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood, and the aluminum itself does not ignite. Ask us to quote the assembly if your home backs onto forest or grassland.

Reflectance

Reflectance, rated colour by colour

Most Alunar® colours are rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC), which publishes each colour's solar reflectance (0.25 to 0.44 when new) and thermal emittance (0.83 to 0.86). Lighter and metallic colours reflect more. The Alunar® finish is warranted for 30 years.

Energy

Colour and summer heat

Lighter colours absorb less summer sun than dark ones. What that saves depends on climate, colour, insulation and attic ventilation, so we don't quote a figure.

Solar

The roof to put solar on

A solar array lasts 25 to 30 years. Put it on an asphalt roof and the panels often have to come off and go back on when the roof wears out underneath them. On an Interlock roof they come off at the end of their own life, not the roof's. Standing Seam takes clamp mounts with no holes drilled; the other profiles use mounting hardware made for metal roofing. At roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre the roof leaves more of the structure's capacity for the array, and your solar installer confirms the framing.

Wind

Locked on four sides

Interlock panels lock to each other on all four sides, with no exposed fastener for a storm to work at. Wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification.

Coastline: Province of British Columbia, Coastal Marine Strategy ↗ gives "more than 26,000 kilometres"; federal mapping gives 25,725 km. Product figures are the manufacturer's: interlockroofing.com ↗

“Definitely not the cheapest roof but looks good! The people worked hard during the hottest days of summer and cleaned up after the job was done! It rained heavily two days after the roof was finished! No concerns! Well done!”

Where we've worked

Kerrisdale roofing: 140 roofs installed across the City of Vancouver. Here's where.

We replace roofs on Kerrisdale houses of every era: original homes and older bungalows, the large modern houses built since the mid-1980s, and the horse-stable streets of Southlands. Our own crews install the Interlock® aluminum shingle system, made in Canada at the Interlock plant in Delta, BC.

Completed Interlock® roofs by community, from our job book. Every other part of BC has its own local site: same company, same crews, same warranty.

    Why aluminum roofing, for Kerrisdale

Kerrisdale aluminum roofing for old trees and west-side rain.

    Old trees

    Streets under grand old trees

The City of Vancouver describes Kerrisdale's residential streets as "lined with sweeping, grand old trees." That canopy is much of the neighbourhood's charm, and it keeps roofs shaded, damp and covered in leaves each fall. Aluminum cannot rot and gives moss nothing to root in. Gutters under big trees still fill, so we show you where to look and what to clear.

    Rain

Between the harbour and the airport

Kerrisdale sits between Vancouver's two long-running weather stations. Vancouver Harbour averages 1,537.4 mm of precipitation a year and the airport station on Sea Island 1,159.5 mm (1991–2020 climate normals). Either figure means a roof that is wet for months at a time. Interlock® panels interlock on all four sides with the fasteners covered, so water runs over the roof, not into it.

    Original homes

Houses that kept their first look

Kerrisdale took its name in 1905 from an interurban stop at Wilson Road, now West 41st Avenue, and the City notes the neighbourhood has retained many of its original homes. On those houses, Interlock® Cedar Shingle and Interlock® Shake keep the look of a wood roof in heavy-gauge aluminum weighing roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per m².

    Wind

When a Vancouver gale brings branches down

The Hanukkah Eve windstorm of December 15, 2006 damaged or uprooted more than 5,000 trees in Stanley Park. On streets as leafy as Kerrisdale's, a winter gale drops branches as well as rain. Interlock® roofs are warranted for wind to 193 km/h (120 mph), installed to manufacturer specification, and each panel is locked to its neighbours on every side.

    Recycled

    Up to 95% recycled aluminum

And the last tear-off your house is likely to need.

    Straight answers

Metal shingles in Kerrisdale: the questions we hear.

    All of our answers ↗

    Which communities does kerrisdaleroofing.com cover?

Kerrisdale, including Kerrisdale Village, the Arbutus Ridge streets north of 41st Avenue and Southlands, and every other neighbourhood in the City of Vancouver. Our job book records each roof by city, not by neighbourhood, so the roof count on this site is for Vancouver as a whole. Burnaby, Richmond, the Tri-Cities, New Westminster, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are covered at vancouverroofing.com.

Do you install metal shingles and aluminum shingles on Kerrisdale homes?

Yes. Every roof we install is an Interlock® roof: Interlock® Slate, Interlock® Cedar Shingle, Interlock® Shake and Interlock® Mediterranean Tile are interlocking aluminum shingles and panels, and we also install Interlock® Standing Seam and solid copper. The roof needs a slope of at least 3/12. We replace asphalt, cedar and tile roofs; we don't do patch repairs or asphalt.

How often is a Kerrisdale roof wet, and does aluminum cope?

Often. Vancouver Harbour records measurable precipitation on 179.1 days a year and the airport station on 169.5 (1991–2020 climate normals), and Kerrisdale lies between the two. Aluminum absorbs no water, cannot rust because it contains no iron, and has no granules to shed into the gutters. Leaves and needles from the street trees are the part that still needs clearing.

Do I need a City of Vancouver permit to replace the roof on my Kerrisdale house?

The City of Vancouver's permit page lists "Installing roofing, gutters, or drain-pipes" under projects that don't require a permit. Changes to the roof structure are another matter, and the City says to contact its Development and Building Services Centre when in doubt. Strata and heritage-listed properties have their own approvals, so we confirm what applies to your address before booking the work.

What does a metal roof cost in Kerrisdale?

See our metal roof cost page for price ranges by profile, taken from our own BC contracts. Every roof is different: structure and other conditions move the price from job to job, so treat those numbers as a rough guide only. For an accurate price you need a roof consultation, on Zoom or in your home.

What does "Kerrisdale's Best Roof®" mean?

Best Roof® is a registered trademark of I.E.L. Manufacturing Ltd., the Interlock company that owns the brand. It is the name of the Interlock® aluminum roof in Canada, so "Kerrisdale's Best Roof®" is that same roof, installed by our own BC crews. It names a product; it does not rank one.
